CERN Japan Students Scholarships Programme 2011 for Young Researchers, Japan

Students Scholarships in the CERN-Japan Fellowship programme is for young researchers of Japanese nationality in LHC data analysis and physics studies

Eligibility:
Nationality: Applicants should be nationals or permanent residents of Japan. You have a doctorate for applicants in experimental or phenomenological physics and/or accelerator science. Candidates who are currently preparing a PhD are eligible to apply. However, they are expected to have obtained their PhD by the time they take up their appointment at CERN. You have no more than 10 years relevant experience after your Masters diploma (or equivalent) at the time of the Selection committee meeting.


International Scholarships Open for International Students: No

Scholarship Description: The CERN-Japan Fellowship programme is for young researchers of Japanese nationality or permanent residence status of Japan who want to work primarily in LHC data analysis and physics studies. Applicants wishing to work on related subjects such as LHC phenomenology or accelerator physics could also be considered. In view of Japan’s commitment to the ATLAS experiment, candidates are asked at the time of application if they intend to work with the ATLAS collaboration. The appointments can be renewed for a total of up to three years, subject to satisfactory performance.

Eligibility:
Applicants need to have a M.Sc. degree in the fields of physics, engineering or computer science. Good communication skills and excellent English are requested. Mastering the French language is a plus but not required. Expertise in the following field is desirable: GPU programming (CUDA), C/C++ programming, image processing or image reconstruction or medical imaging. Some others skills will be appreciated but not required: tomographic reconstruction, emission tomography, Python programming, and Monte Carlo simulation.

Scholarship Description: his PhD position is open to the Laboratory of Medical Information Processing (LaTIM) in the French research unit U650 of INSERM (National Institute of Health & Medical Research). The LaTIM is a research team made up of the University Hospital of Brest, the Faculty of Medicine and Telecom Bretagne (graduate engineering school). Funding for this thesis is supported in part by the European project MEDIATE “patient friendly medical intervention” and in part by “RĂ©gion Bretagne” (Brittany region). The position is located at Brest (France) and will start around September/October 2011 for a period of 3 years.
